Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a practical and structured form of psychotherapy that focuses mainly on problems in the 'here and now'. The basis of CBT is that, what people think affects how they feel emotionally and also influences what they do. CBT can provide you with a greater ability to identify your problems in life and to confront them and solve them. CBT helps you to look at the way you respond to situations. By helping you to understand your reactions CBT educates you about how to change your behaviour so that it becomes more helpful and productive, and less damaging to your wellbeing and mental health.
Counselling
Counselling helps you explore and understand your difficulties and to cope better with feelings of distress or dissatisfaction. The Counsellor helps you to view things more clearly, often from a different perspective. Counselling is used to encourage you to explore various aspects of your life and feelings and to examine in detail the behaviour or situations which are proving difficult for you. As with CBT, Counselling also aims to help you initiate some changes in the way you think and behave so that you cope better with your problems and function more productively at home, at work, and in your relationships with others.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that was developed to resolve the effects of trauma-related disorders caused by exposure to distressing events such as rape or military combat. According to EMDR theory, when a traumatic or distressing experience occurs, it may overwhelm usual cognitive and neurological coping mechanisms. The memory and associated stimuli of the event are inadequately processed, and are dysfunctionally stored in an isolated memory network. The goal of EMDR therapy is to process these distressing memories, reducing their lingering influence and allowing clients to develop more adaptive coping mechanisms.
Guided Self Help & Books on Prescription
The aim of Books on Prescription is to enable people with mental health issues to have good, accessible information about their condition. Our Psychological Therapists prescribe the most appropriate Self Help books for your current problems and you collect these from your local libraries on short term loan. These prescribed books can be used by you on your own, without any professional guidance, or they can be used in conjunction with guidance from one of our Psychological Therapists. The books are prescribed as a Self Help treatment plan to help you learn basic coping strategies for managing problems such as anxiety or low mood.
Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy;
Computerised CBT is simply Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) delivered by an interactive computer programme. The interactive programme works with you, helping you to understand the tools of CBT and learn the techniques that will help you to cope better with problems such as anxiety, depression and phobias. We provide two computerised CBT programmes: FearFighter and Beating the Blues;
Video-linked Psychotherapy
We provide internet-based video-linked psychotherapy for 'hard to reach' groups or those who find this type of therapy more convenient and flexible, to fit in with lifestyle and work. In addition, people may find it easier and more acceptable to access services in this way due as they can access anywhere where there is an internet link.
Group Therapy - Start programme
Self Treatment And Recovery Training is a unique therapist-assisted self-help group programme which provides an opportunity for people with anxiety and depression to come together in a supportive environment and work through their difficulties by undertaking specifically designed CBT assessment and treatment modules. Unlike other group therapy programmes, the S.T.A.R.T programme is formulation driven, making the selection of treatment modules more relevant to the clients' problems.
Modules cover managing emotion, reducing anxiety and stress, challenging unhelpful thinking patterns, improving confidence and self-esteem, managing depression through activity as well as relapse prevention advise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. One to one sessions are also available should clients need to discuss any aspect of their treatment programme.
